Smoking behavior analysis of smokers among doctors, teachers, and civil servants in Shenyang city

Abstract: The Shenyang Health Education Center in May, 2012 conducted a survey on the smoking behavior among doctors, teachers and civil servants. Results shows that the average daily cigarette consumption was 12.2 in the smokers among doctors, teachers and civil servant, 22.7% (302/1329) of them smoke the first cigarette within 5 min after wake up every day; among the young smokers, 54.8% (286/522) started smoking before the age of 20; On average, the daily consumption of smokers among doctors, teachers and civil servants is high with large number of heavy smokers and more addicted to cigarettes; 44.8% (596/1329) of the smokers want to quit smoking, the quitting behavior mainly rely on their own perseverance (88.4%,433/490), quit smoking drugs use rate (19.2%,94/490) and smoking cessation clinic utilization rate (12.2%,60/490) are very low. We should put forward specific mandatory requirements for these special population like doctors and teachers, in order to encourage smokers to quit smoking and to reduce the smoking rates. We also should strengthen the training of doctors, encourage them to provide a brief smoking cessation intervention, and recommend patients to smoking cessation clinic and relevant services.
